Why My Country
Close Its Doors to Syrian Refugees
In light of the recent tragedy which took place in Paris, France,
acceptance of Syrian refugees in Korea has resurfaced due to social and
security point. Because of social and environmental aspects, I oppose to
embracing refugees of Syria.
In a social part, embracing of refugees increase the economic burden
of the country’s citizens who are unprepared or maybe even unwilling to pay
these costs. Also, citizens sometimes build up a negative stance towards
refugees due to unsure governmental regulations. Influx of refugees leads
amount of benefits to the small number of corporations. There is a possibility
that the benefits may cause numerical increase in GDP. However, generally,
these advantages are not equally distributed. In the short terms, farmers, builders,
local merchants and small businesses may take benefits from inflow of refugees.
But it negatively affects to the poor class of the host country because of
inflation and wage decrease caused by increase the number of refugees in the
labor market. Poor class people could experience rising house prices and
falling wages. Especially it is noticeable in some fields where semi-skilled
workers and unskilled workers engage. Sometimes, it might lead degradation of
their life quality[1].[2]
In a security part, refugees,
as they do not have a full citizenship and a sense of belonging to society,
they hold a higher rate of committing crimes. In addition, there is weak
controls over refugees and insufficient sanctions governments set as references
for them to follow. Although acceptance of refugees does not directly correlate
with the increase of terrorism, it definitely would have an impact on the
social and environmental environment which would contrast to that of the
current Korea. In the case of Germany and France can be the
example. It was a world-wide issue that German government announced to accept a
large number of refugees. However, there are some citizens who are against with
this decision. And the anti-immigrant mood leads to anti-immigrant crime.
According to the AP(Associated Press), the number of crime is 567 that has been
taken place near the refugee camp and committed directly to the refugees. It is
three times more comparing with 198 of last year[3].
In addition, the terror threat towards the volunteers, human rights groups and
politicians is increasing. As another example, France, the victim of IS bomb
terrorism, has only 7.5%[4]
the immigrants of Muslim but 60% of prisoners are Muslims[5].
This shows that although the country has accepted a small proportion of immigrant
Muslims into their country, a large amount would havehas
undergone suspicion or crimes to become imprisoned. This numerical value show
that if our
country
don’t proper systems for refugees, embracing of refugees are
definitely lead to problem.
Acceptance
of refugees is a matter that should be taken in humanitarian point of view.
However, as we can find in the case of previous example such as Germany and
France, accepting refugees may lead to short-term problems even though it has
many long-term positive side. Therefore, Acceptance of refugees needs to be
prepared based on certain measures and comprehensive plans.
